Expanding its position in the emergency lighting business, Genlyte Thomas Group LLC, Louisville, Ky., has agreed to acquire the assets of the U.S. Safety System Division of Chloride Power Electronics Inc. from the Chloride Group PLC, headquartered in London.

The purchase would include the U.S. Chloride Safety Systems and LightGuard Emergency Lighting brands. Chloride wants to move out of the emergency lighting business to focus on power protection products, said Keith Hodgkinson, the Chloride Group's CEO.

The proposed acquisition would enhance Genlyte Thomas's existing package of lighting products, marketed under the Crescent, Day-Brite, Lightolier, mcPhilben and Uniglo brands.

The acquisition would also give Genlyte Thomas Group access to certain products it does not currently manufacture, including AC Systems and Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPSs), said Bill Ferko, Genlyte Thomas Group's chief financial officer.

The U.S. Safety Division would continue to operate out of its headquarters in Burgaw, N.C., as a separate division of Genlyte Thomas Group.

Larry Powers, president and CEO of Genlyte Thomas, said Genlyte Thomas would continue to market emergency and exit lighting products, AC Systems and UPSs for emergency lighting applications under the Chloride Safety Systems and LightGuard brand names and sell the products through their existing distribution channels.
