Companies plan to explore commercialization of HTS fault current limiters

American Superconductor Corp., Westborough, Mass., and the Corporate Technology unit of Siemens AG, Erlangen, Germany, recently renewed their strategic alliance for a second year. The companies plan to develop the commercialization of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) fault-current limiters by building and testing fault-limiter components based on American Superconductor’s second-generation HTS wire.

The companies expect that fault-current limiters will serve as high-voltage surge protectors for power grids.
