Iowa Lakes Community College, Estherville, Iowa, has been awarded a gift in-kind, collectively totaling $10,000 dollars from Megger, Dallas-based manufacturer of instruments used for testing and maintaining transformers, batteries, and underground cables. The company has donated equipment that will give students of the Iowa Lakes Wind Turbine Energy Program marketable hands-on experience during training.
Megger's commitment to promoting the education of engineers and to advancing the adoption of renewable energy sources has allowed the company to provide Iowa Lakes Community College with the following instruments: DCM340 clamp meters used for measuring currents in cables without disconnecting them, MIT400 series insulation-resistance and continuity testers, a DLRO10HD dual-power 10A low-resistance ohmmeter, a wind turbine lightning protection test lead set, and a DET4TCR2 four-terminal earth/ground resistance.
Megger has also supplied a quantity of Stitch In Time books, a complete guide to electrical insulation testing, and "Getting Down To Earth," a practical guide to earth-resistance testing. The manuals will be used in various classrooms and offer practical methods of testing.
"The testers that were donated are very hands on," says Doug Zemler, wind energy and turbine technology instructor at Iowa Lakes Community College. "I am very excited to have these available because it makes the students very marketable to the industry and allows them to have a working knowledge of using the instruments,"
