Just being in a particular place can present a significant eye hazard. You may work where:
- Welding is taking place. Typically, welding work does not take long in each location (unless it’s a shop area, where welding is done routinely). Thus, the best defense is typically “come back later.” If you “must” be there while welding is taking place, ensure that welding screens are in place; if that can’t be ensured, then don’t be there. Always look away from any welding.
- Grinding is being done. Grinding typically follows welding, and the same precautions apply.
- Splash hazards exist. Wear splash protection, such as a face shield or goggles.
- Aerosols or mists are present. If you must enter the area, positively identify the potential eye irritants (and respiratory threats). Refer to the relevant MDS and follow the directions.
Finally, don’t work in electrical panels before isolating the energy sources per NFPA 70E.
