Griffin Electric has completed the electrical installation work for both phases of the Huffman High School construction project in Birmingham, Ala.

The first phase of construction consisted of raising a 280,000-sf, two-story high school.  In addition to classrooms and offices, the institution includes a new career/technical wing, with culinary arts classrooms containing a full commercial kitchen, and construction tech labs, with eight electrical trades practice stations.  Also, there is a 1600-seat performance gymnasium and practice gymnasium, as well as an outdoor theater and student courtyard.

Phase two included demolition of the existing high school, plus the addition of a 16-acre athletic complex, complete with a football stadium, baseball and softball fields, and an athletic facility with locker rooms, a weight room and coaches’ offices.

The Griffin Electric team was responsible for installing over 12,000 feet of electrical duct bank on-site, plus a 5000-amp, 277/480v service.  Additionally, the crew installed state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems within the auditorium, which included two 400-amp dimmer racks.

Under the direction of owner’s Program Manager, Volkert, Inc. of Birmingham, the project team also included general contractor, EMJ Corporation of Chattanooga, TN, architect, Charles Williams & Associates of Birmingham, and electrical engineer, I.C. Thomasson Associates, Inc. of Nashville, TN.
