Electrical contractor earns Voluntary Protection Program STAR designation for excellence in workplace health and safety

Guarantee Electrical Co.’s service team at the Valero Refinery in Benicia, Calif., recently earned the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) STAR designation for excellence in workplace health and safety from the California Occupational Safety & Health Administration (Cal/OSHA).  Of 1.4 million eligible work sites in the state, only 75 attained the VPP STAR designation for providing the best feasible job-site safety protection.  VPP STAR recognition also exempts the refinery from Cal/OSHA programmed inspections.

“We are tremendously proud to earn California’s highest safety honor and to be the only electrical contractor in the state managing a VPP STAR-qualified work site,” said Doug Mertzlufft, president of Guarantee, which is headquartered in St. Louis, Mo.

GECO crews built the original refinery for Humble Oil in 1969 and since then have provided continuous full-scope electrical maintenance, instrumentation, and capital project services for 44 years, even as the facility has changed ownership.
