Simple Ways to Improve Maintenance, Part 3

Feb. 11, 2013

For some time now, digital cameras have been a tool for a "best practice" in testing and maintenance: capturing nameplate data as an image file. Advantages include:

  1. Anyone can transfer the information to forms, later. This means reduced time exposed to hazards.
  2. You have an exact record, and can view the file from anywhere rather than walking back out to the equipment.
  3. Common errors of manual recording are eliminated.

You get additional advantages by photographing anything relevant to maintaining the equipment. For example, you can visually document physical damage, workmanship issues, or housekeeping issues.

Your camera's zoom lens can reduce your proximity to potential arc blast points when you're taking maintenance data. Use the camera to document and report safety hazards; remember, a picture's worth a thousand words.
