International Fuel Cells (IFC), South Windsor, Conn., will power the world's largest fuel-cell installation at the Connecticut Juvenile Training School in Middletown, Conn. Project plans call for IFC to deliver six PC25 fuel-cell units, which will provide primary power to the school. Each unit produces 200kW of electricity and 900,000 Btus of heat. The heat produced by the fuel cells will heat and cool the training school.
The entire power installation also includes generators and the electric grid. IFC is working on the project with Select Energy, Select-HEC Inc., and Northeast Generation Services Co. for the Connecticut Department of Public Works.
