NEC requirements for voltage ratings on Class 2 and Class 3 cables

Excluding exceptions, why are voltage ratings not marked on Class 2 and Class 3 cables per the listing requirements of Part IV of Art. 725?

A) Because voltage markings on these cables may be misinterpreted to suggest that these cables may be suitable for Class 1, electric light and power applications.

B) Because voltage markings on these cables may be too high or too low.

C) Because voltage markings on these cables serve no purpose.

D) Because these cables are marked with amp ratings, not voltage ratings.

Find the Answer

Answer: A

The marking requirements for Class 2 and Class 3 cables are outlined in Sec. 725.179(K) of the 2014 NEC. “Cables shall be marked in accordance with 310.120(A)(2), (A)(3), (A)(4), and (A)(5) and Table 725.179(K). Voltage ratings shall not be marked on the cables.”

The Informational Note that follows states: “Voltage markings on cables may be misinterpreted to suggest that the cables may be  suitable for Class 1, electric light and power applications.”
