Being Careful with Raceway, Part 2

Aug. 23, 2016
When running raceway overhead, practice ladder safety.

Raceway is often run overhead. That often means working on ladders or scaffolding when accessing it. Scaffolding is meant to be assembled only by people trained in assembling it. If you haven’t been trained to assemble it, don’t. But always inspect scaffolding before using it or ask the crew that assembled it to confirm that it is ready for use.

What if you’re using a ladder to access the raceway?

Ladder safety, or lack of it, is an ongoing problem in the industry. Your first line of defense is to use the correct ladder for the job. If you find yourself needing to stand on the top rung or even the one right below that to reach your work, replace that ladder with a taller one.

Don’t carry things up a ladder. It’s a common safety practice to lift tools up in a bucket or bag, using a rope. You could lift raceway with a rope, but it’s usually easier to have an assistant hand it up to you.

Move the ladder, rather than lean off it. Remember that leaning off eventually means falling off.
