Making Startup Testing Safe, Part 3

Avoid making these errors to increase safety in your startup testing program.

Many startup testing tasks require the use of tools and test equipment. Do you make these errors?

• Using a digital multimeter (DMM) not rated for the energy where you’re testing. If it’s an industrial facility, avoid problems by using only CAT IV DMMs.

• The famous worn screwdriver. Any chipped or worn tool is inviting injury. You may skin your knuckles or damage the fastener so that someone else skins theirs. Replace worn tools.

• Adjustable pliers used in lieu of wrenches/sockets. Slipping and fastener damage are just two of the predictable results.

• Taped tools pretending to be insulated tools. This is an electrical shock just waiting to happen.

• Failing to conduct a tool inventory. Know which tools you have with you at the start, and which ones you have when you’re done. One simple way to do this is to keep a list of any tools you are using. Then, go over the list at the end of your shift and make sure you positively identify the location of every tool on the list.
