Transformer Installation Safety, Part 3

Tips for safely using a cherry picker lift.

Suppose your project includes supplying a service to a small, light-duty industrial shop. This involves setting the relatively small transformer on a pad. You’re using a manual “cherry picker” (lift). It seems simple enough to lower the boom once the lift is lined up, except lining it up isn’t always easy.

For example, with an outside pad you may have trouble rolling the lift forward just that one inch you need. Inside or out, you may have to go back and forth several times to move that transformer to the left the 2 in. required to line everything up so it can be bolted in place.

These problems are solved with a little manual “nudging”. The smart electrician pushes only on the upper half of the unit, eliminating crush risk. The even smarter electrician has a rope on the sling and makes no direct contact. And he NEVER stands on that pad.

When inserting those leveling shims, the smart electrician also holds the shims with pliers instead of his fingers.
