What's Wrong Here?

Nov. 1, 2003
How well do you know the Code? Can you spot violations that the original installer either ignored or couldn't identify himself? Here's your chance to second-guess someone else's work from the safety of your living room or office. Our NEC meister Joe Tedesco has done the dirty work and found the violation. Now it's your turn to tell us what it is. Be one of the first three people to identify the violation

Can you spot the Code violations?

Find the Answer

Joel Nash, design engineer, Tetra Tech, Inc., Pasadena, Calif.; Alan Hartley, Church & Murdock Electric, Erie, Penn.; and Roel Trevino, Trevino Electric, Falfurrias, Texas, all correctly identified the Code violation in the November 2003 column.

After the landscaping work is complete, this sealing fitting won't be accessible for inspection. In addition, this fitting isn't designed for use in direct burial applications.

Per 501.5(C)(1) of the 2002 NEC, “Enclosures for connections or equipment shall be provided with an integral means for sealing, or sealing fittings listed for the location shall be used. Sealing fittings shall be listed for use with one or more specific compounds and shall be accessible.”
