2019’s Under 30 EC&M Electrical All Stars: Tyler Wilson

May 16, 2019
Tyler Wilson of The Sack Company started a monthly study group for the apprentices and taught continuing education classes.

TYLER WILSON
Job Title: Assistant Project Manager
Company: The Sack Company
Location: Statesboro, Ga.
Age: 24
Years in Industry: Six
Outside Interests: Deer and duck hunting, competing in local bass fishing tournaments, and spending time with his girlfriend, Jennakae Jenkins

Oftentimes, when young professionals earn their college degrees and start working in the electrical trade, they opt to work in the office and not the field — but not Tyler Wilson. He says he is not afraid to work his way up.

“I may have a title and a degree, but I don’t take that into consideration,” says Wilson, who earned his bachelor’s degree in construction management with a minor in business from Georgia Southern University. “I do not know everything. I still work on project sites every chance I get and am able to learn from some of the most experienced guys I know. I have a formal education, but that hasn’t stopped me from learning more about the trade.”

Tyler Wilson reviews scope changes for an upcoming project.

The Sack Company offers a four-year electrical apprenticeship course, and he enrolled in it to become more proficient in the trade

“Some things you can’t learn from studying books,” he says. “You have to physically put your hands on the material and tools to understand the installation process, so I’m getting to see the project develop from both sides.”

In addition, he says his field experience has been invaluable when it comes to ensuring that the proper material is on site before a project begins.

He says his interest in construction started when he was in high school and working for his dad framing and doing finish carpentry.

“I found out I could go to school for construction, and I told my father I wanted to be the guy above him,” he says. “My father was proud and pushed me every step of the way.”

Today, he says every day is a new day with new challenges. He starts off each morning getting to work an hour early. Following a daily huddle session, he is responsible for tasks such as assisting in material pricing, change orders, cost adjustments, quantity takeoffs, submittal log management and close out documents, any construction discrepancies and pre-construction meetings. As an electrical assistant project manager, however, his favorite responsibilities are reading wire diagrams, hosting pre-construction meetings, and quantity takeoffs.

Wilson focuses on getting the offsets just right before installing them into the panel.

“Another favorite of mine is watching a new construction building take shape from the ground up,” he says. “To see all the hard work put into the building is amazing to me.”

While at Sack Company, he has started a monthly study group for the apprentices and taught continuing education classes, which has helped him to form a bond with his teammates and develop his skills as a leader.

“Being in the apprenticeship program, I understand where they are coming from,” he says. “I don’t try to set myself apart from the others because I am right there with them online once a week.”

Since he first started at the company, he says technology has come a long way. For example, the company has been using Building Information Modeling (BIM) for some of its electrical projects, and the electrical raceways are prefabricated to improve productivity in the field.

“This is helping us finish projects ahead of schedule, being under budget, and being more efficient off and on the job site,” he says.

In the next decade, he would like to work as an electrical project manager, and he says he sees himself as a project manager by the time he is 30.

“I am 24 now going on 25, and I still have time ahead of me,” he says. “I couldn’t be in a better position to learn as much than where I am now. My plan is to never stop learning, continue working out in the field whenever I can, and graduate from the electrical apprentice program.”

Chris Gaskin, electrical project manager for The Sack Company, says Wilson is the definition of what being in construction is all about.

“Tyler has shown nothing but determination and the willingness to learn every aspect of the business/trade in and out,” Gaskin says.
