The International Brother of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Washington, D.C., has created a disaster fund, the IBEW Disaster Fund NYC Inc., to benefit the children and families of the 20 Local 3 and Local 1212 members who perished in the World Trade Center attack on September 11. At press time, 16 electricians from Local 3 and four Local 1212 members had lost their lives in the attack—all Local 3 members were employees of NECA contractors.

This Disaster Fund came about as a result of the 36th Constitutional Convention of the IBEW, held in San Francisco on September 10-14. After hearing the horrific news of the terrorists’ attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, delegates immediately expressed their concern, sympathies, and willingness to ease the pain felt by IBEW members and their families. The Fund is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in New York State and will receive a tax exemption number shortly. Contributions to the Fund will be disbursed in accordance with the guidelines set by the elected trustees: Dennis McSpedon, chairman; Joseph R. Bechtold, secretary; and John E. Marchell, treasurer.
