You make your living with your hand tools; do you treat them accordingly? Treating your tools with the respect they deserve will keep them in “safe-to-use” condition for many years. There’s a reason why some electricians’ tools stay in good shape for many years.
Here are some tips you should keep in mind:
- Use the tool for the job it’s intended to do. A screwdriver isn’t a prybar, punch, or chisel. A ratcheting wrench isn’t a prybar or a hammer.
- Use at the correct angle and with the proper (not excessive) force.
- Set tools down, rather than toss them somewhere.
- Clean your tools before putting them away.
- Keep them organized so you can easily find the right tool; use an organizing tray or similar device.
- Inspect each tool after use. If it looks worn or damaged, replace it. You don’t want a tool to break or slip while you’re working near energized parts (or anywhere else).
