Much of the safety focus is on preventing fatalities. In fatality order, the most common causes of construction site death are falling, transportation accidents, and being caught in collapsing materials or struck by an object. The fourth place finisher is on the mind of every electrician: contacting electrical current.
But injuries also take their toll. They can not only cost you significant time off work, they can end your electrical career. In order of greatest number of reported incidents, the causes are overexertion, being struck by an object, and falling.
Sprains and strains are the most common type of injury among construction workers, followed by lacerations and then back injuries. To reduce the risk of:
• Ankle sprain, replace shoes or boots that have worn treads, flattened cushions, or worn uppers. Clean up spills and trash, to reduce the likelihood of slipping and turning your ankle.
• Sprains in the shoulders, arms, wrists, and fingers, use the proper tools in good condition. Don’t lift anything that’s so heavy or awkward it could put undue exertion on your joints or require risky body position.
