Photo 1. The digital multimeter (DMM) is the most commonly used type of multimeter. This DMM has a removable display for safety and can be used for various measurements, including AC and DC voltage and current, resistance, frequency, and temperature when the thermocouple accessory is used.

How to Use Multimeters Effectively

A multimeter and its test leads allow electrical workers to reach into an energized panel, touch live circuit components with the end of the test leads, and capture electrical readings like voltage, current, and resistance. If not used effectively, inaccurate readings result in a failed diagnosis. Or, worse yet, misapplication can result in costly, or even deadly, consequences.

Why Tap a Feeder in the First Place?

One reason you might tap a feeder is because you need to supply a specific load, and there’s already a feeder in the area with ample ampacity to also supply this load. Rather than expend the labor, time, and materials to run another feeder circuit, you tap into the nearby feeder. If you do tap a feeder, overcurrent protection must be provided for each phase conductor at the point where the conductors receive their supply except as permitted by Sec. 240.21(A) through (H).

Factoring Rewards into Purchase Decisions

Greater appreciation by contractors and suppliers of their mutual dependency may be among the many byproducts of the pandemic’s disruptive impact on the global goods supply chain. But relationships have surely been stressed given materials shortages, shipment delays, and price spikes, meaning some may lie in disrepair when the dust finally settles.
