In many production facilities, managers outside of maintenance like to “help” with repairs of critical equipment by standing around the repair site looking serious. Those with a real need to impress will annoy the repair techs with questions that amount to “Are we there yet?”
These are the same people who didn’t want to allocate the requested working space, didn’t want a “fix it” locker near the equipment, and didn’t want any of their department budget allocated for the special spare parts, special test equipment, and special training that would dramatically shorten the repair times.
The astute maintenance manager will make notes of these deficiencies during the repair. Within a day or two, that same manager will discuss these notes with the repair techs and incorporate their ideas.
The next step is to write up an enumerated list of action items to present to those managers. For each item, quantify the cost savings in terms of revenue per hour. This will get people’s attention and weaken resistance to implementation.
