More Preventive Maintenance in Less Time, Part 5

July 6, 2015
In previous Parts of this series, we looked at some ways to simplify maintenance (and repair) tasks.

Simplifying tasks has advantages beyond saving time in performing the maintenance tasks. Simplification also reduces:

• Errors in performing those tasks. This means less rework, fewer “human error” time bombs, and less unscheduled downtime.

• The time of exposure to hazards such as arc flash and arc blast. These and other safety advantages, such as the reduction of fatigue contribute to making a compelling case for simplifying wherever you can.

In previous Parts of this series, we looked at some ways to simplify maintenance (and repair) tasks. Here’s another idea you should consider.

Use quick disconnects wherever suitable and practical. For example:

• A cabinet contains a dc power supply but it’s tucked away behind a panel. Replace the panel screws (those “drop me” items that drive people batty) with snap-in connectors.

• In lighting fixtures, replace solderless connectors with quick disconnects.

• Use quick disconnects instead of threaded couplings in hydraulic and pneumatic lines.
