What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Bee Extra Careful

Dec. 20, 2021
Think you know what’s wrong with this application?

Hint: Bee extra careful.

Thank goodness the bubble cover installed for these receptacles was clear, which allowed me to see the surprise waiting underneath. While bubble covers may fulfill the requirements in Sec. 406.9(B)(1) for providing an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not anything is plugged into the receptacles, one problem I have encountered on multiple occasions is the device allows insects to get inside the cover even when it is closed. This is because there needs to be an opening in the cover for the cords to pass through when it is closed. Bees, wasps, hornets, and other insects can easily crawl through this opening and take up residence underneath the cover. Outlet box hoods used in applications such as this non-locking, 15A and 20A, 125V variety must be listed and identified as “extra-duty.” Receptacles in wet locations are required to be listed and identified as weather-resistant type.
