What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Plumber’s Paradise

Oct. 13, 2022
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Plumber’s paradise

Using PVC plumbing pipes for running wires is an interesting choice of methods. The sharp bends in this type of piping can certainly make for difficult cable pulls. Section 110.8 tells us that “only wiring methods recognized as suitable” are included in the Code. I don’t ever remember there being an Article covering the installation of plumbing pipes. I suppose we could make an argument that this plumbing pipe is only a “sleeve” rather than a “wiring method” and therefore Sec. 110.8 would not be applicable, but in any case, this makes for a great photo and discussion. Do you think Sec. 110.8 applies here? We can probably make a case that the MC cables are not properly secured per Sec. 330.30(B). We may also be able to cite a violation of Sec. 300.11(D) as cables are not permitted to be used as a support for other cables, raceways or nonelectrical equipment. This plumbing pipe looks like an easy place for critters like mice, rats, and other rodents to enter the building. In my experience, rodents love to chew wiring which usually doesn’t work out well for either the wiring or the rodent!
