How well do you know the Code? Think you can spot violations the original installer either ignored or couldn't identify? Here's your chance to moonlight as an electrical inspector and second-guess someone else's work from the safety of your living room or office. It's your turn to identify the violation.

If someone gets a little too aggressive sharpening a pencil, he or she just might rip the cover right off this junction box. Of course, a missing box cover would expose live wires and create a shock and fire hazard.
This pencil sharpener installation creates a violation of Sec. 110.3(B) because the box cover was not designed to have a pencil sharpener attached to it. I’m also pretty confident you’ll never see instructions saying this is permitted.
The constant pulling and tugging from using the pencil sharpener could also loosen the supports for the box. According to Sec. 110.8, “Only recognized wiring methods are included in the Code.” Which Article covers pencil sharpener installations? I can’t find any.
Another violation I would like to mention is the cable being secured to the EMT entering the top of the box. This is a violation of Sec. 800.133(B), which prohibits this communication cable from being “strapped, taped, or attached by any means to the exterior of any raceway as a means of support.”
