Philadelphia Controller Finds Dangerous Electrical Conditions at Schools

The Philadelphia Office of the Controller discovered dangerous building conditions, including fire and electrical hazards, have yet to be corrected at 10 city schools after the were initially inspected seven years ago. The department has also uncovered even more risks at 10 other newly inspected schools.

According to a report from the Philadelphia Business Journal, a recent review, between November 2014 and March 2015, revealed 15 of the 20 school buildings reviewed have some type of fire hazard: missing exit signs, hallways blocked with objects or large items in front of fire exit doors.

Electrical risks, including exposed wires, were noted at 70% of the inspected sites, the Controller said. Three schools had unlocked electrical closets, which have bus bars rated at 600V.
