Rab Electric provides fixtures for Olympic Rings

Rab Electric Manufacturing, Northvale, N.J., had a visible presence at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City with its lighting fixtures. The company provided 1,850 industrial lighting fixtures to form the shape of the Olympic rings on a mountainside 5,000 ft above Salt Lake City.

Rab makes outdoor and industrial lighting and lighting-control sensors. The fixtures were each 140 ft in diameter. Electricians did the installation in December and January working in 5 ft of snow using snowmobiles and helicopters to transport equipment. Multiple generators provided power, and 24-hour guards prevented vandalism.

The Rab vapor-proof fixtures forming the rings had energy-efficient 42W compact fluorescent lamps totaling 77,000W to create the white and bright Olympic ring symbol.
