We noted previously that you can have only one service per structure, but there are four types of exception to the rule. We covered Special Conditions. Now it’s time to take at a look at the other three exceptions.
The second one is Special Occupancies [230.2(B)]:
- Multiple-occupancy building that lacks the space to provide service equipment accessible to all occupants. An example would be a large strip mall.
- Single structure large enough to make two services necessary. An example would be a large manufacturing facility.
Manufacturing facilities often run into a situation covered by the third exception, which has to do with capacity [230.2(C)]. One of the three types of this exception is where the capacity requirement exceeds 2,000A (at a supply voltage of 1,000V or less).
The fourth exception, for differing characteristics, is yet another one you see in manufacturing facilities (among other places) [230.2(D)]. Suppose the facility has some processes that require medium voltage (MV) or motors that run on same. These are specific loads for MV.
