In this episode of EC&M On Air, Editor-in-Chief Ellen Parson discusses Luminaire Level Lighting Controls (LLLCs) with a panel of industry experts: Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, Chris Meek, and Aprille Balangue. They work in conjunction with BetterBricks, a commercial resource of Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, to help building professionals gain a competitive edge in the market. 

Dr. Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg is a professor of architecture at the University of Oregon. He has founded the Institute of Health in the Built Environment and directs Biology and the Built Environment Center and the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory in Portland and Eugene, Ore. His work seeks to facilitate integration amongst a broad network of researchers and practitioners on issues concerning health, comfort, and sustainability in the human ecosystem in order to support human and community health. He co-authored a white paper on the intersection of health and energy benefits of LLLCs, available here.

Christopher Meek is a professor of architecture at the University of Washington and Director of the Center for Integrated Design at the University’s College of Built Environments. Meek’s areas of research include building energy performance for new construction and retrofits, daylighting, visual comfort, electric lighting, and climate responsive design.

Aprille Balangue is a principal engineer at Travis Fitzmaurice Wartelle Balanague Engineers since 2007. She has 11 years of electrical design experience including power distribution, communications systems, audio visual, fire alarm, security, access control, CCTV, and architectural lighting design. She has served as project engineer and project manager on numerous educational, multi-use, and community projects where she focuses on delivering smart, sustainable solutions for learning, working, and living environments.
