What to Consider When Finding LLLC Solutions and Selling LLLC for Retrofits

June 13, 2023
Learn more about the resources available when using LLLCs in your next project.

By now, you’ve probably heard of Luminaire Level Lighting Controls (LLLC). If you haven’t, LLLC is a type of networked lighting control system, which integrates both sensors and load controllers into each fixture, providing unparalleled flexibility, control, and deep energy savings.

Whether you’re ready to dive into LLLC for an upcoming project, or just want to learn more, the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA)’s educational resource for commercial building professionals, BetterBricks, has recently added some helpful video trainings to their educational offerings. These video trainings will help you understand and sell the benefits of LLLC and better utilize the Design Lights Consortium (DLC) tools to find the right system for your project.

To find LLLC-capable products that are most applicable and/or beneficial to your project, NEEA recommends utilizing the DesignLights Consortium Qualified Product List (QPL). It can be challenging to do research with the DLC’s QPL tool, so NEEA's training shares exactly how LLLC can address various project needs and how to discover applicable LLLC products. You can watch a video course here.

When selling an LLLC system for a retrofit project, it’s important to articulate installation advantages, understand how the value proposition of LLLC influences sales, and build trust by delivering value and meeting customer needs. There are many non-energy benefits that may be important to a customer beyond energy efficiency, including asset tracking, space utilization, occupancy tracking, and more.

There are also multiple benefits to installers and suppliers, including reduced labor and components; fewer SKUs to procure and process, deliver and stage; shortened construction schedule; and elimination of complicated and time-consuming control wiring. In about 10 minutes, NEEA’s training video covers all the non-energy benefits of LLLC and how to communicate the value proposition to your customers. You can watch the video course here
