The National Electrical Code Process in Progress

Dec. 10, 2019
Thirty states have incorporated the 2017 NEC, while others continue the update process.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently announced that as of Oct. 1, 2019, 30 states have completed their 2017 NEC update process. Seven other states are in the process of revising the statute or administrative rule through which the NEC is updated to reference the 2017 edition. Five states that are currently using the 2017 NEC have commenced the process of revising the statute or administrative rule through which the NEC is updated to reference the 2020 edition. Eight states are using the 2014, 2011, or 2008 version of the NEC and are not in the process of updating the edition currently in use.

The NFPA also provided a table which shows the edition of the NEC in effect in those states having a statewide regulation that impacts construction, trade licensing, or both. For each state, it lists the effective dates for the current edition of the NEC in effect, the 2017 NEC update status, and other editions of the NEC update status.
