Q. What are the Code rules relating to the protection of cables and raceways installed parallel to framing members and furring strips?
See answer below.
A. Cables or raceways run parallel to framing members or furring strips must be protected by installing the wiring method not less than 1¼ in. from the nearest edge of the framing member or furring strip. If the edge of the framing member or furring strip is less than 1¼ in. away, a 1⁄16 in. thick steel plate of enough length and width must be installed to protect the wiring method from screws and nails [Sec. 300.4(D)].
Exception No. 1: Protection is not required for rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, PVC conduit, or electrical metallic tubing.
