Code Quiz: GFCI Requirements in Commercial Garages

How much do you know about the NEC?
Dec. 3, 2020

Based on the 2020 NEC.

Question: What are the requirements for GFCI protection of receptacles in a commercial repair garage?

 See answer below.

Answer: All 125V through 250V receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits rated 150V or less to ground, 50A or less, and all receptacles supplied by three-phase branch circuits rated 150V or less to ground, 100A or less shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.

Explanation: In the 2020 NEC, Sec. 511.12 was revised to align the GFCI requirements with Sec. 210.8(B). This eliminated the language "where electrical diagnostic equipment, electrical hand tools, or portable lighting equipment are to be used," which now mandates GFCI protection for personnel for all receptacles meeting the current and voltage limitations installed in a commercial repair garage.
