Question: What are the marking requirements for raceways, cables, and enclosures that are part of the essential electrical system (EES) of a healthcare facility?
See answer below.
Answer: Raceways, cables, or enclosures of the life safety and critical branch shall be readily identified as a component of the EES. Boxes and enclosures (including transfer switches, generators, and power panels) shall be field- or factory-marked and identified as a component of the EES. Raceways and cables shall be field or factory marked as a component of the EES at intervals not to exceed 25 ft. [NEC Sec. 517.31(C)(1)(a)]
Explanation: New language in the 2020 NEC specifically requires marking of the EES components. This marking can be field or factory applied. For raceways and cables, the marking must be at no more than 25-ft intervals.
