What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Wet Behind the Ears

Hint: Wet behind the ears

Receptacles installed in damp or wet locations must comply the requirements in Sec. 406.9. For this wet location, installers need to follow the rules in Sec. 406.9(B). For 15A or 20A, 125V or 250V receptacles installed in wet locations, Sec. 406.9(B)(1) specifies the enclosure must be weatherproof whether or not an attachment plug is inserted. Any outlet box hood used for this application must be identified as “extra duty.” These receptacles must be listed and identified as weather-resistant type (WR) receptacles. An exception allows the use of an enclosure that is weatherproof-when-closed in wet locations subject to routine high-pressure spray washing. For other receptacles, Sec. 406.9(B)(2)(a) permits an enclosure that is weatherproof with the attachment plug cap inserted or removed for an unattended location. Section 406.9(B)(2)(b) permits an enclosure that is weatherproof when the attachment plug is removed for attended locations. This location is unattended, and the cord remains plugged-in 24/7. This is the wrong type of cover for this type of installation.
