NFPA Issues TIA on Topic of Receptacle Identification

TIA revises Sec. 517.41(E) of the NEC

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) issued a Tentative Interim Amendment (TIA) to the 2014 Edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) [TIA 14-7 (SC 14-10-2 / TIA Log #1157)]. The TIA was processed by Code-Making Panel No. 15 and the NEC Correlating Committee — and issued by the Standards Council on October 28, 2014, with an effective date of Nov. 17, 2014.

This particular TIA revises Sec. 517.41(E) to read as follows: “The cover plates for the electrical receptacles or the electrical receptacles themselves supplied from the essential electrical system shall have a distinctive color or marking so as to be readily identifiable [99:6.5.2.2.4.2].”

Note: A TIA is tentative because it has not been processed through the entire standards-making procedures. It is interim because it is effective only between editions of the standard. A TIA automatically becomes a public input of the proponent for the next edition of the standard; as such, it then is subject to all of the procedures of the standards-making process.
