When it comes to Code changes, most electrical professionals want all the help they can get translating specific revisions into their real-world applications. Two manufacturers are trying to make that task a little easier by offering resources specifically geared toward their product lines. Mersen, formerly Ferraz Shawmut, and Thomas & Betts have recently released guides on 2014 Code changes.
Mersen is offering “2014 National Electrical Code: Changes in Overcurrent and Surge Protection” as a free downloadable PDF. It identifies and explains selected key Code changes in overcurrent and surge protection, including new circuit breaker requirements for 1,200A plus circuits, SPD Type 4 surge protective devices, surge protection without overcurrent protection, short circuit current rating, solid state motor circuit protection, ground fault protection for 1,000A plus circuits, sizing transformer protection, PV shut-off for first responders, and selective coordination requirements.
Available as a print publication (contact T&B sales rep) or a downloadable PDF, “Analysis of NEC Code Changes 2014” is a free reference guide. It covers Code changes affecting ABB low-voltage products as well as T&B products. Among the more significant changes covered in the guide are a change from 600V to 1,000V thresholds and the addition of direct current (DC) to the Code. Other changes include the addition of receptacles in garages, inclusion of cable ties for plenum applications, allowance for universal conduit bodies and full wire fill, removal of 600V limitation on liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit, listing of power distribution blocks for line-side applications before the meter, requirement of extra-duty in-use weatherproof covers in all wet locations, complete revision of the electrical vehicle charging systems article, expanded requirements for wind turbines, including those with greater than 100kW-rated power, new articles pertaining to fire-resistant cables and energy management systems, and correction of internal diameter that increases the inside diameters, which may permit additional conductors.
