Switchboard Installation Safety, Part 1

Feb. 7, 2017
Take time to assess the situation in full before diving into this project.

Installing a switchboard presents more safety problems than many people think.

First of all, these are heavy. Sure, someone else probably unloaded the unit and set it inside the building. But it has to be set on the pad and bolted into place. Fingers and toes are at risk. Do you have the proper lifting equipment, and do you know how to safely use it?

Before setting the panel in place, you need to assess the work area. What personal protective equipment (PPE) is required? What other safety equipment is required? If it’s a construction area with welding going on, do you need to erect screens? If it’s an operating plant with chemical processes what’s your plan in case of a leak or spill?

What other activities are going on in or near the work area? How will those affect you?

Where are the emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and First Aid station?

If lockout/tagout will be required for tying this into the existing power distribution, what will that do to your lighting?

Take the time to assess the situation in full before diving into this project.
