Construction sites are inherently dangerous. These practices will help keep you safe.
- Put your hard hat and safety glasses on before going through the gate. You won’t fumble on the way in and you won’t forget to put them on.
- Remind yourself that dangers exist on the way to your work area, not just in it. And they exist regardless of starting time, quitting time, break time, or lunch time.
- If a coworker shows up without his security badge, don’t let him tailgate in on yours. If he is authorized onsite, security can issue him a temporary badge for the day.
- Be courteous going through the gate, in either direction. Some people treat it like a cattle chute, pushing and shoving; this introduces an injury risk at the gate and it starts things off with an unsafe attitude.
- On your way to the work area, follow the designated route or walkway.
- Never walk under a crane boom. If you can’t take another route, stop and wait until the way is clear.
