With the skilled worker shortage looming in the construction industry, The UP Companies (UPCO) is taking action to bring new employees on board. Here are three ways the company and a construction industry association are promoting careers in the trades.

Create a music video.UPCO partnered with Howard “Chingy” Bailey Jr., a hip-hop recording artist, to produce a parody song based on “Old Town Road.” The company, which has three different business units, was looking for a new and fun way to reach out to community members about job openings. Michael B. Kennedy, Jr., president of UPCO, wrote the lyrics to the song and recorded the video with Chingy and Cornelius Banks, a Square UP employee.
  • Organize a job fair. In addition to the music video, The UP Companies is also planning to host a job fair in March 2020 at its offices in Maryland Heights, Mo. Jobseekers can meet with representatives from different service lines, the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), and local labor unions
  • Perform community outreach. AGC of Missouri is working with technical education schools, high schools, community-based organizations, workforce boards, and career days to create awareness about jobs in the industry. Also, the association built a website called “Build Your Future – Build Missouri” and launched a scholarship program to provide support and encouragement for future workers.
