• What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Protection from the Elements

Do you know how this installation violates the NEC?

    Hint: Protection from the elements

These set-screw-type EMT connectors are not suitable for use in this outdoor wet location. Section 314.15 requires boxes, conduit bodies, outlet box hoods, and fittings installed in wet locations to be listed for use in wet locations. This same Section also requires fittings to be placed or equipped to prevent moisture from accumulating in the box or conduit body. Water and moisture can easily enter this conduit body via the set-screw EMT connector. I am doubtful the raceway penetrating the exterior wall is sealed with duct seal, fiberglass, foam, or other sealants per Sec. 300.7(A) to prevent the circulation of warm air into a colder area. This type of air circulation can result in condensation forming inside the raceway which can cause damage to conductors and equipment. In addition, installing a clip or strap on this EMT would help in complying with the supporting and securing requirements in Sec. 358.30(A).
