NLB Releases Video Panel on Lighting for Seniors

Experts discuss role of circadian lighting technology.

The National Lighting Bureau (NLB) recently released a video of its panel discussion called “Lighting for Seniors.” Moderated by Randy Reid, NLB executive director and editor of the EdisonReport, the panel features experts Robert Soler of BIOS Lighting and Terry McGowan of IEEE.

The panel discusses how circadian lighting is a way to increase vision optimization and quality of life for seniors because it tries to replicate lighting outdoors and bring that lighting indoors. This means brighter days and darker nights to seniors’ physiology, which has been seen to result in less daytime napping, less nighttime wandering, reduction in Alzheimer’s progression, less sundowning, and less emotional outbursts. One of the best ways to bring in this technology is by creating a brighter environment or a greater spectrum of lighting. “The eyes of seniors are different than the eyes of everyone else,” notes the report.
