Earlier this month, the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) officially adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code. DSPS Secretary Dan Hereth signed the new NEC on September 1st with union and industry leaders, moving the state away from the 2017 version of the Code.

With the 2023 edition of the NEC, Wisconsin adds key safety updates. Those additions include:

• Requirements for whole home surge protection.
• Restrictions on how many feeders can supply a building or structure.
• Permit and Inspection requirements for services provided on vacant land.

As of today, 19 states have adopted the 2023 NEC in some form, and six have already adopted the 2026 NEC. According to information from NFPA, As of August 2026, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia are all in the process of joining Wisconsin in adopting the 2023 NEC.
