Code Quiz: Surge Protection Devices for Dwelling Units

July 6, 2023
Test your knowledge of the NEC with this challenging question.

Based on the 2023 NEC.

Question: True or false? Dwelling units require surge protection devices.

See answer below.

Answer: True

Explanation: The requirement for surge protection at dwelling units was added to the 2020 NEC in Sec. 230.67 for all services supplying dwelling units. The 2023 NEC expanded those requirements to include dormitory units, guest rooms and guest suites of hotels and motels, and areas of nursing homes and limited-care facilities used exclusively as patient sleeping rooms. Requirements for surge protection were also added to Sec. 215.18 and Sec. 225.42 for any of these same locations that are supplied by a feeder.
