Code Quiz: Multi-Wire Branch Circuits in Healthcare Facilities

Test your knowledge of the NEC with this challenging question.

Based on the 2026 NEC.

Question: Are multi-wire branch circuits permitted to supply life safety lighting and power circuits in a health care facility?

See answer below.

Answer: No

Reference: Section 517.15

Explanation: The use of multi-wire branch circuits for life safety was prohibited in Sec. 700.19, however a change in the 2026 NEC section Sec. 517.26 eliminates the requirements of Art. 700 from essential electrical systems in health care facilities. Section 517.15 was added to make it clear multi-wire branch circuits are prohibited to supply emergency loads in a health care facility.
