Ranking this year's top players in electrical contracting

Every fall, the staff of EC&M unveils its highly anticipated Top 50 electrical contractors list, ranked specifically by electrical and datacom revenue. For the past decade, Top 50 players have managed to top their previous year's performances each year (as a collective group), typically with an increase of at least $1 billion per year. Given the ramifications of the pandemic on the 2020 market, we expected this year to be an exception to that rule. However, the Top 50 companies defied all odds, pulling in more than 34 billion in total electrical revenue in 2020, beating the $33.1 billion recorded in 2019 and the $28.8 billion mark from 2018.

Although the revenue totals exceeded expectations, not all markers were trending upward in this year's survey. For example, unlike past years, the majority (53%) of Top 50 respondents characterized their business climate as "fair" instead of "strong" compared to 15% the previous year. The number of Top 50 companies that did not meet revenue expectations in 2020 rose 19 percentage points from last year as well.

This photo gallery offers a sneak peek at the companies making it into the Top 20 spots, listed in descending order and based on their 2020 electrical sales data. To find out more about the driving forces behind the key players in the electrical contracting business, look for the full 2021 Top 50 Electrical Contractors Special Report and Top 50 Rankings List, coming soon to www.ecmweb.com and featured in the September print issue.

The original research EC&M conducted to create the Top 50 article each year has become an invaluable resource for consultants, manufacturers, and electrical design and contracting firms, making it an EC&M institution.
