What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Which Way is Up?

Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Which way is up?

Whoever installed the cover for this receptacle did not know which way was up. The cover is upside down! Look closely and you may see the pry-outs where cords are meant to pass through positioned on the top instead of the bottom. That may be a clue as to why the flip-up part of the cover is missing too. Installing listed or labeled equipment contrary to what the instructions indicate is a violation of Sec. 110.3(B). Section 406.9(B) requires this 15A, 125V GFCI receptacle to be installed in an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not an attachment plug is inserted. “Extra-duty” type outlet box hoods are the required type of hood to be used here. Other listed weatherproof enclosures not utilizing outlet box hoods are also permitted. This GFCI receptacle is required by Sec. 406.9(B) to be listed and identified as a weather-resistant (WR) type.
