Powering a Greenhouse: New Service, Exhaust Fan and Lighting Power at the LA County Arboretum

This project details the installation of a comprehensive electrical system at the LA County Arboretum greenhouse.

Greenhouses look simple from the outside, but electrically they combine a humid, wash-down environment with loads that run for long hours: exhaust fans pulling air across the growing benches and rows of fixtures hung from the roof trusses. When the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia, Calif., needed a new electrical service for its greenhouse, the work came down to delivering reliable power to those fans and lights and building it to hold up in that environment. Working with JT Site Services, Left Coast Electric installed all pathways, panels, cabinets, lights and power for the greenhouse system, completing the work in July 2026. The new service feeds a 37.5 kVA transformer, 240/480V to 120/240V, single-phase, 3-wire, serving a 100A panel. On the trusses, the raceway is 1/2-in. to 1-in. EMT with watertight fittings, supported by Unistrut channel with individual straps for the runs to devices. All main conduit pathways terminate in NEMA 3R watertight junction boxes, all fixtures are vapor-tight, and all lighting and exhaust fans are powered and disconnected at the control cabinets shown in photos 11 and 12 of this gallery.

This gallery traces the project from conduit going up on the open steel trusses, through ladder work at the fan wall, to the finished lighting, the new panelboard and transformer in the electrical room, and the conduit and gutters serving the control cabinets. The main technical takeaway: in a humid greenhouse, raceway support, watertight terminations, clear working space at distribution equipment, and accessible fan disconnects matter as much as the service size itself.
