When is a conduit body, such as a capped elbow or a service-entrance elbow that has sufficient size to provide free space for all conductors enclosed in it, not permitted to contain a splice, tap or device?

    1. When the enclosed conductors are 6 AWG or smaller
    2. When the enclosed conductors are 1/0 or larger
    3. When the conduit body is intended only to enable the installation of the raceway
    4. Both A and C above

    Answer: D

Short radius conduit bodies have limitations when the intended use is for a splice or tap, or to contain a device [314.16(C)(3)]. The limiting factors are:

    • the enclosed conductors are 6 AWG or smaller,
    • the conduit body is intended only to enable the installation of the raceway, and
    • the conduit body is of sufficient size to provide free space for all conductors enclosed in the conduit body.
