Trystar Acquires Controlled Power Co., Total Plant Management Group

Dec. 14, 2021
The acquisitions will complement Trystar’s current offerings to customers.

Portable and industrial power products manufacturer Trystar acquired Controlled Power Co.(CPC) in November to complement its current offering of emergency and temporary power solutions, while adding power conditioning and conversion equipment. In early December, it bought Total Plant Management Group Inc. (TPMG) to add prefabricated buildings, control panels, metering skids, and modular electrical substations to its portfolio of power cable, power distribution, and test products.

With the acquisition of Troy, Mich.-based CPC, Trystar expands its portable and permanent power distribution offerings to include power inverters for emergency lighting, high-efficiency transformers, power conditioning, and battery backup (uninterruptible power) equipment for sensitive electronics and critical applications. It also adds industrial DC power (rectifier) solutions to its product portfolio.

These solutions are used in a variety of markets and applications such as commercial buildings, data centers, medical equipment, and metal finishing (e-coating). The companies serve some common market segments, but this acquisition also brings new markets, customers, and applications to Trystar.

“Controlled Power has a long-standing service element of the business, matching well with Trystar’s commitment to supporting customer needs before, during, and after a solution is delivered,” said Trystar CEO A.J. Smith. “Controlled Power’s vertically integrated manufacturing, including transformer winding and production, will be a great addition to our capabilities as well, but more importantly, we have a similar approach to business: produce high-quality products engineered to meet our customers’ specific needs and exceed their expectations in every interaction they have with us.”

Enhancing the Control and Reliable Delivery of Power

Headquartered in Houston, TPMG designs, manufactures, and integrates both blast-rated and nonblast-rated custom prefabricated steel buildings to protect workers and critical equipment including switchgear, electrical power distribution equipment, and automation and control equipment. These remote buildings serve as transportable control centers and substations and can be configured in any size and in multiple stories.

In contrast to conventional permanent buildings and enclosures, they are more flexible, accommodating a wider variety of applications. They can also be more cost-effective. Further, the modular design offers scalability when a site may need to change its electrical power and controls over time.

The TPMG buildings are fabricated and tested before they arrive on-site so they can be installed and put into service quickly. The product line offers both blast resistant and non-blast resistant models which are ideal for a multitude of industries like power generation, energy, oil and gas, mining, chemical, petrochemical, nuclear, steel, pulp and paper, data centers, education, defense, and pharmaceutical.

“Both companies excel at customization and quick turnaround to meet stringent customer requirements … and that distinguishes us from our competitors,” Smith noted. “It also helps that our collective products are manufactured in the U.S. which resonates with our customers and gives them a measure of confidence given ongoing supply chain challenges.”

TPMG engineers are directly engaged with OEMs and end-users. It then transports the completed structures to the job site. Part of TPMG’s expertise is in turnkey project management where it has earned a reputation for completing quality projects on time, within scope, and on budget.
