Kayla Horn

Job Title: Estimator

Company: Amteck

Location: Lexington, Ky.

Age: 23

Years on the Job: 2

Interests: Staying active, spending time with friends and family, playing golf, and traveling

When Kayla Horn graduated from college two years ago, she was still deciding on her career path. Her mom, who has worked at Amteck for more than 30 years, encouraged her to apply for a front desk position at the company. As she gained more exposure to the day-to-day operations, projects, and overall work that goes into the trade, she realized she had a genuine interest in the field.

She attended the company’s QuickStart program, which expanded her understanding of the field and helped her to build a strong foundation of industry knowledge. Since joining the company, she’s worked alongside experienced employees who have been willing to teach and guide her through the industry.

“Between the hands-on learning, mentorship from coworkers, and company training opportunities, I have continued to grow both professionally and personally within the electrical industry,” she said.

As an estimator, her main responsibilities include reviewing drawings and specifications, completing takeoffs, assisting with project estimates, and helping ensure projects stay organized and on schedule throughout the estimating process.

“Estimating requires a high level of attention to detail, organization, and time management, so learning how to prioritize tasks and stay focused has been an important part of my growth in the position,” she said.

In her role, she helps keep the company at the forefront of technology by continually learning new systems, adapting to process changes, and being willing to ask questions and improve her skills with new tools.

In the future, she plans to advance into a more senior estimating role with greater responsibility and expertise. Her goal is to build a strong understanding of the industry so she can contribute at a higher level and become someone others can rely on for knowledge and support within the process.

To reach these goals, she plans to continue learning as much as possible in her current role, gain hands-on experience across a wide range of projects, and build strong industry knowledge.

“I believe that staying consistent, being willing to learn, and continuing to take on new challenges will help me grow and develop within the company and the electrical industry over time,” she said.
