While in college, Jeremey Orf secured an internship at Toth & Associates, where he had the opportunity to help an electric utility. Through this experience, he gained an appreciation for all the individuals who work to keep the power on for people across the world.

“Working for an electric utility definitely makes me feel like I'm providing a contribution to the world with my profession,” he said.

Orf attended Missouri State University, studying engineering through the partnership with the Missouri University of Science and Technology. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering summa cum laude, he continued working at Toth & Associates, where he trained in transmission design during his internship and transitioned to planning system engineering about a year after graduating.

He’s now approaching eight years in the industry and has become a professional engineer in the state of Missouri. He said the training he received, especially the diverse set of experiences gained while working in different departments at a consulting firm, gave him knowledge of different parts of the utility industry. He also had the opportunity to teach the company's new hires.

“It's been a rewarding experience to realize that throughout the years, I have increased my skill set and feel confident in passing it along to others,” he said.

As a system planning engineer, he conducts design analyses, assigns projects to technicians or engineers, and develops processes. One day, he sees himself getting more involved with IEEE and possibly pursuing political office.

“I would like to see more programs across both IEEE and the United States that make things easier for people to succeed in their dreams and the paths that they want to take,” he said.
